The 7 most common UK student visa application mistakes (and how to avoid them)

13 June 2026 · 2 min read

Most UK student visa refusals aren't down to anything dramatic. They're paperwork mistakes — wrong document, missing translation, financial evidence held for one day too few. Here are the seven we see most often, and what to do about each.

1. Financial evidence held for less than 28 days

Your maintenance funds must sit in an eligible account for 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before you apply. A single dip below the required amount during that window resets the clock. Check every day of the statement, not just the first and last.

2. Wrong account holder or unsupported account type

Funds must be in your name, your parent's name, or a legal guardian's name — with the right supporting documents. Joint accounts with non-parents, investment accounts, and some online-only accounts are not accepted.

3. CAS details that don't match the application

Your name, date of birth, passport number and course details on the application must exactly match the CAS your sponsor issued. One transposed digit is enough to trigger a refusal.

4. Missing or non-compliant translations

Any document not in English or Welsh needs a certified translation with the translator's details, date, and a statement of accuracy. A family member's translation is not acceptable.

5. ATAS certificate missed

Some courses require an ATAS certificate. Check whether yours does — and if so, apply early; ATAS can take weeks.

6. TB test from a non-approved clinic

If you're applying from a country that requires a TB test, it must come from a UKVI-approved clinic. Tests from other clinics, even valid ones, are not accepted.

7. Submitting without a final review

The fastest way to catch all of the above is a structured review before you submit. UK Student Visa Review goes through your documents in the order UKVI will, flags anything missing or inconsistent, and tells you what to fix before you pay the fee.

Most refusals are preventable. Run through this list, then put your documents through UK Student Visa Review before you submit — it's a fraction of the cost of reapplying.

Quick answers

How long before applying should I review my documents?
At least a week — long enough to fix anything found, especially financial evidence timing or missing translations.
Does the review check my CAS?
Yes. It cross-checks your CAS details against your passport and application data.
What if I've already submitted?
A review is most useful pre-submission. Post-submission, focus on responding promptly to any UKVI requests for further evidence.
